Yoga is like a vibrant tapestry, with each thread representing a unique path toward self-discovery, health, and inner peace. You’ve probably heard of yoga styles like Vinyasa or Hatha, but these are just two among many that you can practice! The beauty of yoga is that it offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for something vigorous and energizing, or something gentle, soothing, and spiritually awakening.
11 Yoga Types
Here’s a closer look at some of the many types of yoga—each as unique as the people who practice it.
1. Hatha Yoga: The Foundation
If yoga were a tree, Hatha would be its roots. This classical form of yoga focuses on the basics: physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and mindfulness. It’s perfect for beginners or anyone with a busy mind who is really looking to slow down and reconnect with their body.
Expect: Gentle, steady movements with plenty of time to settle into each pose.
2. Vinyasa Yoga: The Flow
Vinyasa is often called a “flow” style because of how smoothly you transition between poses. It’s often dynamic and creative, with movements synchronized to your breath. No two classes are the same, making it a favorite for those who like variety, rhythm and playfulness.
Expect: A workout that feels like a dance with yourself, often paired with vibey music.
3. Ashtanga Yoga: The Discipline
Ashtanga is yoga in its most structured form. You’ll follow a set sequence of poses, moving through them with intention and discipline. It’s physically demanding but deeply rewarding for those who thrive on routine and measured progress.
Expect: Sweat, strength-building, and a sense of accomplishment as you master the sequence.
4. Yin Yoga: The Stillness
In a fast-paced world, Yin offers a pause to calibrate. This deeply restorative style involves holding poses for several minutes to target the body’s connective tissues. It’s less about concentrated effort or contracting muscles and more about surrender.
Expect: Quiet, introspective stretches that leave you feeling grounded and open.
5. Kundalini Yoga: The Awakening
Kundalini is as much about spiritual energy as it is about movement. This practice combines repetitive postures, breathwork, chanting, and meditation to awaken your inner energy (kundalini).
Expect: A transformative experience that leaves you energized and spiritually aligned.
6. Bikram Yoga: The Heat
Love a challenge? Bikram yoga is practiced in a heated room (around 105°F) and follows a strict sequence of 26 poses and two breathing exercises. It’s known for its detoxifying and strength-building benefits.
Expect: Intense focus, lots of sweat, and a sense of achievement.
7. Restorative Yoga: The Recharge
Think of Restorative yoga as a big, cozy hug. With the help of props like bolsters and blankets, you’ll settle into poses designed to relax your body and mind.
Expect: Deep relaxation, healing, and stress relief.
8. Iyengar Yoga: The Precision
Named after B.K.S. Iyengar, this style emphasizes alignment and detail. You’ll use props like blocks, straps, and blankets to achieve impeccable form in each pose.
Expect: A focus on technique that builds strength, mobility and is designed to prevent injury and relieve chronic pain.
9. Power Yoga: The Sweat
If you’re looking for a fitness-forward yoga class, Power Yoga is for you. This can also be called “Yoga for Athletes.” It’s inspired by Ashtanga but less rigid, offering a high-energy, calorie-burning workout.
Expect: A fast-paced, challenging practice that leaves you feeling strong and energized.
10. Bhakti Yoga: The Devotion
Bhakti is the yoga of love and devotion. This practice is in some ways more spiritual and energetic than physical, focusing on connecting with the divine through chanting, prayer, and meditation.
Expect: A heart-opening journey of gratitude and surrender.
11. Jivamukti Yoga: The Philosophy
Blending physical practice with spirituality, Jivamukti incorporates asanas, chanting, meditation, and lessons in yogic philosophy.
Expect: A soulful practice that challenges your body and expands your mind.

How to Choose the Best Yoga Style That Suits Your Needs?
These are certainly not all the types of yoga that exist in the world today. They are, however, the ones you’ll find listed on most teaching calendars and schedules.
The best type of yoga is the one that meets your needs.
Are you craving stillness, recovering from an injury, surgery, extended illness or pregnancy? Try Yin or Restorative. Need to move and sweat? Go for Vinyasa or Power. Looking for something spiritual? Kundalini or Bhakti might be calling your name.

Different Types of Yoga for Different Sessions
As a seasoned instructor, I tailor classes to who’s in the room, what season we’re in, the time of day we’re practicing and the intention of the practice. With beginners, athletes, corporate groups and aging populations, I teach mostly Vinyasa ‘slow’ flow, foundations of yoga (similar to Hatha), Yin, Deep Stretch and Restorative classes.
(Fun Fact: I started as a Kundalini practitioner in college, practiced Bikram in my 20s while living in Europe, taught at an Ashtanga studio in Texas, trained in Vinyasa and Yin styles and most feel connected and emotionally moved by Bhakti. Now in my 40s, my body responds best to Iyengar classes.)
Try Taking Different Types of Yoga Classes
The beauty of building your own practice is that it’s like a buffet: Choose what you want when you’re craving it. You don’t have to stick to one style! Explore! Experiment! And research the teachers who are guiding you.
As you explore different styles of yoga, learn to listen carefully to your body. What leaves you feeling alive versus exhausted? What actually feels good– not stressful? What makes you feel like you’re moving safely and intelligently?
Allow your yoga journey to evolve with you.
So, which style will you try next?
